Citizen Science – Schwalbenmonitoring

Der Naturpark Landseer Berge besteht aus einer abwechslungsreichen Kulturlandschaft und bietet damit den Mehl- und Rauchschwalben als Kulturfolger geeignete Lebensbedingungen. Doch leider nimmt die Zahl der Vögel derzeit auch in ländlichen Gegenden deutlich ab und so möchte der Naturpark den Bestand der Mehl- und Rauchschwalben erfassen um geeignete Schutzmaßnahme zu ergreifen.
Als Citizen Scientists spielen die Bewohner in den Naturparkgemeinden eine wichtige Rolle, die ihre Nester rund um Haus und Hof dem Naturpark melden. Durch die Meldungen erfahren wir mehr über die Verbreitung, die Anzahl und die Lage der Nistplätze der heimischen Schwalbenarten.
Auch durch Kartierungsarbeiten werden die vorhandenen Brutplätze der Rauch- und Mehlschwalben festgehalten. Die bestehenden Nester sollen erhalten bleiben und kaputte bzw. nicht haltende Nester sollen an geeigneten Stellen durch Kunstnester wiederhergestellt/angebracht werden. Interessierte Hausbesitzer bekommen nicht nur Kunstnester sondern auch Kotbretter um die Hinterlassenschaften der Schwalben an störenden Stellen zu vermindern.
Die Naturparkschulen spielen ebenfalls eine wichtige Rolle im Projekt. Es fanden Workshops zum Thema Schwalben und Schwalbenschutz statt um das Bewusstsein für diese Tiere zu stärken.

The nature park Landseer Berge is characterized by a varied cultural landscape and thus offers suitable living conditions for the barn swallows and the house martin. Unfortunately the number of birds in rural areas is currently falling and so the nature park gathers the population of the house martin and the barn swallow in order to take suitable protective measures. The people in the nature park play an important role as citizen scientists. They report their nests around the house and yard and with this information we learn more about the distribution, the number and the location of the nesting places of the native swallow species. Interested house owners not only get nesting aids but also planks to reduce the swallows legacies in disturbing places. The nature park schools play an important role in this project. To increase consciousness of the swallows workshops were held.
