Bündnis Nachhaltige Hochschulen
Global challenges — such as climate change, loss of biodiversity and scarcity of resources — require coordinated efforts in all areas of society and a change in values as a contribution to sustainable development, including ecological, economic and social dimensions of sustainability. Universities have an important social role and responsibility in this context. On the one hand, the sustainability genre can be integrated into academic programs and new knowledge can be generated through transdisciplinary research, and on the other, universities function as institutional role models and are both drivers of innovation and multipliers concerning knowledge transfer and sustainable behavior. In 2021, 13 Universities of Applied Sciences* founded the association "COOP Sustainable Universities" and have since then been actively working on joint sustainability efforts and educational offers to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the areas of teaching, research, university management and cooperation — doing their part as responsible universities. In addition, they contribute to raising awareness about systemic sustainability among students, teachers, researchers and other employees and stakeholders. The COOP’s working style is collaborative, inclusive, solution- and future-oriented. The COOP’s partner institutions focus on the exchange of experience and skills, the development of synergies and the joint use of resources, the development of networks and long-term partnerships, as well as the transfer of knowledge between all stakeholders. This commitment is implemented through four areas of action: collaboration and exchange, formation and use of synergies, joint positioning and visibility, and reflective examination of all dimensions of sustainability. The COOP is currently working on various sustainability actions concerning teaching and research as well as organizational responsibilities. For example, the COOP is stepping on a collaborative learning curve concerning the new EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). One of the COOP’s task forces is developing a collaborative summer academy that will wander from campus to campus each year, beginning in the Summer of 2023, as well as an introductory online-workshop for teachers, called the “Shoehorn into Sustainability,” that will be offered already in fall of 2022; the same group is also testing a self-developed guideline for SDG integration into teaching. The research task force focuses on networking its researchers and is in the midst of developing two research projects, one dealing with the development of an assessment tool for evaluating SDG contributions and performing SDG mapping, and another engaging a transdisciplinary group of participants in a biomimicry design process asking nature for possible contributions to individual SDGs — in order to abstract solutions from nature for application in society. Another project concerns the first joint conference in February 2023 at the University of Applied Sciences FH Kufstein Tirol. The very first COOP’s joint action offered a "Sustainability Day" online series of lectures on various sustainability topics for Earth Day 2022: https://www.fh-burgenland.at/ueber-uns/nachhaltigkeit/ sustainability day The COOP invites all types of universities to join the efforts as members of the association. Some Colleges of Education have already expressed interest, as have some universities outside of Austria. *COOP Members: FH BFI Vienna, FH Burgenland, Campus 02 Fachhochschule der Wirtschaft, FH Campus Wien, FH Joanneum, FH Kärnten, FH Kufstein Tirol, FH Upper Austria, FH St. Pölten, FH Technikum Wien, FH Vorarlberg, IMC FH Krems, MCI The Entrepreneurial School
