New Zealand became the site of a radical experiment in agricultural reform in the 1980s. The strong application of neoliberal policies in agriculture swept away prior conventions, institutions and markets for agricultural products. The country also has the distinction of being the most export-oriented agricultural producer in the world with over 90% of food that is produced being exported to markets around the world - particularly to Europe, USA, Japan and China. Critics have questioned whether this imbalance of exporting over local foods - as well as the total removal of all subsidies and incentives - could provide any opening for the development of more sustainable options for agricultural production. This talk will examine the emergence of ‘market driven’ initiatives to create ‘green’ products certified as organic or through the Eu-ropean GLOBAL-GAP organsation which were produced to meet new demands for green products in high value food markets. The talk will concentrate on the potentials and limitations of ‘market driven sustainability’ for transforming agricultural spaces towards more sustaina-ble systems - particularly in the light of recent, intense, controversy over the sustainability of land-use in New Zealand and the emergence of a more militant local food and environmental critique of mainstream agriculture in New Zealand.
